Unique and Uplifting

Founded by the philosopher and educator, this unique institution is an international boarding school nestled in the picturesque Hampshire countryside. Tailored for students aged 14 to 19, the school, accommodating approximately 75 students, offers a holistic education that stands unparalleled in Europe. This distinctive approach emphasizes not only academic pursuits but also the overall well-being and personal development of each student.

A Sarala Education

‘The whole movement of life is learning.’

Beginning by abolishing punishment and reward, eschewing grades, comparisons, and competition, this educational approach empowers students to design their own challenging study programs. Encouraging project-based learning and the creation of excellent portfolios, the system allows for the freedom to make mistakes without judgment. Focused on nurturing individual sparks, students discover their talents and passions. While supporting exam preparation, the philosophy recognizes that life’s richness extends beyond measurable knowledge. Operating in an atmosphere of friendly equality, this educational model offers a holistic learning experience, unveiling the vastness of life itself.

‘The whole movement of life is learning.’

Finding a sense of home within the school environment is a transformative experience. This familial atmosphere not only generates creative energy but also supports each student in their educational journey. Representing over 25 countries, the school community becomes a microcosm of the world, celebrating diversity. Students actively contribute to the school’s upkeep, fostering a deep connection. This shared responsibility, such as the daily collective cleaning routine, promotes a lasting sense of belonging. The resulting friendships are enduring, contributing to an inclusive and affectionate atmosphere, devoid of fear and conducive to a positive learning environment.

‘Home means where you have energy, where you are creative, where you are happy…’

Most of us love to be at home, but imagine feeling equally at home in a school that is like a large family. The feeling of being at home generates creative energy and supports every student in their learning. The Sarala family is from 25 countries or more, so the feeling begins to embrace the world, with all its diversity. This is their second home and the students feel it and respond to it; they help run the school, take responsibility for it, care for it (together with staff, they clean the whole school every morning for 30 minutes). They love living here. They form friendships at Sarala that last them a lifetime. Along with staff they create an atmosphere that is inclusive, affectionate and free of fear.

‘We want the student to have first class health, and we mean it.’

Prioritizing holistic well-being, the institution places equal emphasis on food, exercise, and mental health. Culinary offerings are exclusively vegetarian or vegan, prepared by an international catering team, ensuring a delicious and varied menu. The Victorian walled kitchen-garden not only provides fresh, organic produce but also serves as an outdoor classroom for students. The commitment to health extends to a diverse range of physical activities, including swimming, football, yoga, climbing, badminton, pilates, hiking, dance, and ultimate frisbee. Recognizing the importance of mental health in the face of contemporary pressures, the institution adopts an integrated approach to life. This approach is designed to nurture every student fully, with careful attention given to their mental well-being.

‘If you lose touch with nature, you lose touch with humanity.’

Encouraging a deep connection to the earth, the institution emphasizes hands-on learning in the outdoors. Every student is taught the essential skills of sowing seeds, tending to plants, and harvesting fresh produce. Recognizing the vital importance of caring for the planet and the natural world, this institution stands apart by giving significant importance to these aspects of education. Set against the backdrop of the Southdowns National Park and encompassing 40 acres of parkland and gardens, students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the stunning landscape. Here, they can explore the wonders of nature, fostering a profound understanding of the environment and the satisfaction of getting their hands dirty in the process.

Testimonials

The institution has been a pioneer in British education in various aspects, including the early incorporation of stillness or mindfulness, well before these practices entered the educational mainstream. The emphasis on inquiry and active learning is another area where the institution has been at the forefront of educational thinking.
SIR ANTHONY SELDON
The development of pupils in spiritual, moral, social, and cultural aspects is excellent.
